“I dried my tears, and armed my fears
With ten thousand shields and spears.”
–William Blake, “The Angel” (1794)
I think of my body like a harp sometimes, one with finely tuned strings that get plucked days in advance of certain cosmic phenomena happening. For me, no cosmic phenomena register so viscerally like the energies surrounding eclipses. To quote T.S. Eliot’s magnum opus of Modernism, The Wasteland (1922), “My nerves are bad to-night. Yes, bad” (line 111).
If you’re a Virgo like me, this onset of frayed nerves likely began a little over a week ago, when we were given a chance to press a Cosmic Reset Button on Sunday the 13th when the New Moon conjunct the Sun in Virgo also featured a partial solar eclipse–all of this taking place in Virgo’s 1st House of Self. It was a high-energy detonation event for many, and its impact is still being felt. With this Reset button, everyone, regardless of Sun Sign, gets to determine which life circumstances and actors on their personal world stage are no longer in alignment with their Highest Good and make adjustments accordingly. If you’re a Virgo, you’ve got the advantage of already excelling at discernment/separating the proverbial wheat from the chaff, and the 1st House lesson is to make life adjustments that prioritize self-care. If that hasn’t already been on your Virgo agenda, then chances are the Universe/how you define Divinity has probably presented you with a dramatic circumstance in the wake of the eclipse to make you have no choice about deciding to Put Yourself First!
As of the time of this writing, the Sun is coursing through the final degrees of Virgo and getting ready to enter the cardinal Air Sign of Libra early tomorrow morning (4:21 a.m. CDT), ushering in the Autumn Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the Spring Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. The Sun joins Retrograde Mercury in Libra, ushering in a note of caution to ensure that communications and commerce in the Venus-ruled sign of fairness, charm, and sociability promote harmony instead of discord. The following day, September 24, action-oriented Mars enters sensual and steadfast, workaholic Virgo, and his mantra could very well be, “Let’s get shyte done perfectly the first time!”And the perfectionists of the world will cry out, “Huzzah!”
But it’s what’s slated to happen four days after the Autumnal Equinox that will have everyone everyone either celebrating or reeling in shock/ducking for cover: the total full moon lunar eclipse in 4 degrees Aries the night of September 27 (it begins 7:11 p.m. CDT with the apogee of the eclipse occurring at 9:50, the shadow not fully dissipating until shortly after midnight on the 28th). Full moons always oppose whatever sign the Sun happens to be transiting. The full moon in Aries, the infant of the Zodiac endowed with Me-First energy, is opposite the Sun in relationship-oriented Libra. The intensity of this Self vs. Other dynamic, as formidable as it is on its own, is going to be exacerbated by the “blood moon” lunar eclipse energies. In other words, be on the lookout for people going full-throttle apeshit. In fact, you’ve probably already noticed that many people have begun to do just that!
This is the fourth and final blood moon eclipse, completing a tetrad that began in the spring of 2014. The last time we experienced such a blood moon tetrad was 1982, and we won’t be slated to have another tetrad experience until 2033, emphasizing the need to pay attention and set your high-vibrational intentions for this weekend!
The Aries-Libra Polarity
As with the Moon and Sun themselves being in opposition at the time of the Moon’s fullness, so too will the Moon’s two Nodes oppose one another: the South Node, which, in your chart, indicates your karmic baggage/past-life experiences you don’t need to rehash anymore (phew!) will join the Moon in Aries; the North Node, which indicates the lessons you need to learn in this incarnation/where you need to orient yourself in terms of self-growth (again, look at the House in your chart where this Node appears) is in Libra, reminding us that all of life consists of navigating relationships. The questions posed by this polarity are:
- How are you showing up in all of the relationships of your life–romantic, business, familial, and otherwise?
- What is the balance of power in these relationships? What dividends are you reaping for the investments you’re making?
The number-one Libran consideration: Is it a fair exchange of energy? If not, why not? How can imbalances be rectified?
The energy of Aries is to ensure that the Self’s needs are being met. A classic Aries consciousness culled from world literature would be the character of the Dauphin, son of the King of France, in Shakespeare’s glorious history play, Henry V, “Self-love, my liege, is not so vile a sin as self-neglecting” (II.iv.130-131). Libra, on the other hand, insists that we have a high degree of emotional intelligence to factor in the needs of others in our decision-making. The goal of this total lunar eclipse is thus a tricky one: Don’t be so focused on other people at the expense of your own self-care, but don’t be so preoccupied with yourself that your relationships begin to suffer. Libra’s keyword is “balance.”
It’s no less than an inner alchemical working too, with the inner Mars (ruler of Aries) coupling with Venus (ruler of Libra). The Red King mating with the White Queen, the conjunctio that leads from Albedo to Rubedo. Strength and compassion. Force and grace. Giving and receiving.
(As a juicy astrological aside, Mars and Venus will in fact have a glorious conjunction in Virgo the second week of October! Stay tuned!)
As the profound energies build in anticipation of the blood moon eclipse this weekend, you might find yourself already experiencing distressing physical or mental and emotional (or all of the above) states of being. I’ve been experiencing surprising panic attacks in public and intense feelings of grief, which I’ve been expressing privately through hours of sobbing during the insomnia that’s plagued me since last weekend. Thus it’s critical that we be good to our bodies, decompress from stress as best as we can and avoid situations and people that make our blood pressure spike. Eat nourishing foods that, ideally, have not been processed (I’ve been craving different types of berries). Exercise daily. Sleep. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and keep your larynx moist so that you can better speak your truth! Surround yourself with positive people who have your best interests at heart. Ground yourself in nature–I’ve been taking advantage of the pleasant weather here in Chicago while it lasts and have been walking barefoot in parks, leaning my back against the trunks of trees to breathe consciously from the diaphragm, flushing out negative energy and drawing up healing energy from the earth. (I was informed by tree spirits years ago that this process does not harm the tree in any way; it’s the same function the tree performs to transmute carbon dioxide into oxygen.) Pray. Meditate. Reach out to the Powers you serve: Gods, Goddesses, Ancestors, Helping Spirits. Ask for help. Discordant energies are notorious for making you feel cut off and isolated, disenfranchised and powerless. Don’t believe it!
As you make self-care your priority, you increase your vibrational level, and this can only improve all of your relationship dynamics. That’s the key to achieving balance in the Aries-Libra polarity.
If you’re a Virgo like me, the blood moon eclipse invites a Reset button to be pressed in your 8th House of Intimacy, Sex, Death, and Other People’s Money/Resources. Again, look at the balance of power between Self and Other with these life themes. Your ability to analyze will be aided by power-conscious Pluto, which goes Direct in 12 degrees of Capricorn two days before the lunar eclipse, asking you how, where, and why you’ve been giving your power away. Redress all imbalances or remove the people/situations that are holding you back: those are Pluto’s stark directives in concert with the Libran theme of harmony and the Aries theme of Self-Care.
Have you been feeling out of sorts in any way, and think the upcoming total lunar eclipse might be affecting you in advance? Do you have any ideas on how you’re going to tread the cautious dance of Self and Other that this Aries Blood Moon invites you to? I’d love to hear from you.
There’s a lot of fear-based energy floating around in the mass consciousness. Mitigate its ability to throw you off your center. Turn off the news. Avoid negative people. Act with honor in all your undertakings. There’s nothing wrong with feeling fear, and remember that its antidote is courage–one of Aries’ gifts. Courage isn’t the absence of fear, but being aware that you’re afraid and yet still having the guts to embark upon a path of the peaceful reclamation of your power. May all your Gods, Guides, Ancestors, and Spirit Helpers walk with you!
