Ride the Waves: The Astrology of February 2018

Ride the Waves: The Astrology of February 2018

(c) Anna Applegate

Starting out with the Fixed Air vibes of Aquarius and moving into full immersion into the Mutable Neptunian ocean of Pisces, the month of February will have us riding energetic waves both smooth and choppy. By the end of the month, we will have a stellium of five planets (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Neptune, Chiron) in Pisces.

Mercury in Aquarius

The month begins with the fleet-footed Messenger of the Gods beginning His transit into Aquarius, which lasts until February 17. Mercury in Aquarius prizes innovative, out-of-the-box thinking, strategic planning, and broader-picture analysis. Be receptive to new insights and fresh solutions to stale problems when Mercury sextiles Aquarius’ ruler, Uranus, on February 15. You will have the information you need to make decisions. Before exiting out of Aquarius, Mercury will be conjunct the Aquarius Sun at 29° on February 17, heralding more innovative data to be captured, but given that there will be a square between warlike Mars and dreamy Neptune on the same day, separating truth from fantasy might be more difficult than usual. (More on the Martian square to Neptune in a bit.)

Personal Planets in Aquarius Square Off Against Jolly Jupiter in Scorpio and Sextile Innovative Uranus in Aries

Venus, Mercury, and the Sun will be making Their transits at a steady clip within a few degrees of each other all month, which means that They take their respective turns, while in Aquarius, squaring off against Jupiter in Scorpio and sextiling Uranus in Aries. Beautiful and bountiful Venus is the first to make the square to Jupiter, 21° of Aquarius to 21° of Scorpio, on February 3. When the two planets known in the Classical Western world as the “Benefics” square each other, guard against excesses of a sensual nature.

While the twentieth-century actress Mae West famously quipped that “Too much of a good thing can be wonderful,” a Venusian-Jupiterian square can quickly empty our bank accounts and expand our waistlines! Aim for moderation (advises this Virgo author).

The Aquarius Sun squares Jupiter on February 10, also bringing the temptation of a second round of indulgences that may not be financially viable. Mercury’s square to Jupiter three days later asks us to pay attention to the details involved in the big, grand visions we’re charting for ourselves.

Venus sextiles Uranus on February 6, beckoning us to celebrate quirkiness and intellectual stimulation in our romantic partners, perhaps even meet new ones unexpectedly in offbeat places—or explore/intensify kinkiness in existing partnerships, especially if either of these planets falls in or happens to be transiting your 8th House. This aspect also encourages impulsive retail therapy, including the acquisition of high-end art, so mind your bank balances. It’s a playful, stimulating aspect that won’t tolerate boring people or the “same old thing” in affairs of the heart.

The Aquarius Sun sextiles wild-card Uranus on February 13, lining up the right people, situations, and opportunities for us to take advantage of so we can move forward in life, so pay attention. Synchronicity abounds. Healing energies can arise spontaneously.

The cycles of lunar and solar eclipses are predictable, regularly occurring events that follow the opposite Zodiac signs marked by the North and South Nodes of the Moon. Starting with last summer’s dramatic total solar eclipse in Leo, the eclipse cycle for this year documents the push-pull dynamism between Leo (where the North Node is currently transiting) and Aquarius (where the South Node is), the karmic lesson of integrating the Heart-Centered Self (Leo) into the Group Mind (Aquarius). Eclipses don’t always discharge their full energy at the exact moment when they happen, so the full moon eclipse in Leo on January 31 will still be rippling its energies out into the world while it gets “answered” by the New Aquarius Moon/ Partial Solar Eclipse on February 15.

The Aquarius Sun and New Moon will be forming a tight conjunction to Mercury at 25° of Aquarius and a sextile to progressive Uranus at 25° of Aries. Expect “Aha!” moments, breakthrough insights, and energetic overload. We will be longing for change. Since Jupiter will be squaring the luminaries and Mercury, be careful that you don’t exaggerate your capacity to handle obligations. Don’t make promises you know you can’t keep or take on more work than you can realistically handle. You can’t be all things to all people either—remember that “No” is a complete sentence!

Just a few hours later, at 8:42 p.m. (CST), the Moon will enter Pisces.

The Plunge into Piscean Waters

Venus will be the first of the personal planets to usher the exodus from Aquarius and into Pisces; depending on your time zone, She enters the Mutable Sign of the Dual Fishes on February 10 or 11. Venus is exalted in Pisces, relieved to trade in Her Aquarius engineer’s uniform for a beguiling mermaid’s tail. Venusian love in Pisces takes on very conventionally “romantic” overtones but also deeply mystical, agape-level compassion as well. Some astrologers subscribe to the “octave” theory of planetary energies, which postulates that Neptune is the higher-vibrational frequency of Venus. “Merging” with a partner is what Venus longs to do in Pisces, as Neptunian energy is all about nondifferentiation. While this can be great for forging a psychic bond between you and your romantic partner, even heightening the energies between you in shared spiritual activities such as ritual, if you do magical work together, it can also be a huge red flag for codependency, so, as always, define what healthy boundaries look like for your relationship and keep them intact (says the Saturn-loving Virgo)!

Mercury enters Pisces at 10:28 p.m. (CST) on the 17th, trading in His data-gathering activities and the practical application of knowledge for poetic musings and communion with Divinity. It’s possible to dream very strange things indeed during this transit, so keep a journal on your bed’s nightstand and record the messages from your subconscious.

The Sun enters Pisces at 11:18 p.m. (CST) on the 18th, marking the tail end of the winter season and inviting us all to adopt a slower, more meditative pace of life.

Try Punching Someone Underwater: The Square Between Mars and Neptune

Feisty Mars in fiery Sagittarius squares sluggish Neptune from February 15-17. Take note of your energy levels: many people become physically sick during this transit, so make sure you’re doing your part to keep your immune system robust—increase your intake of Vitamin C and probiotics. Your ability to focus may be impaired and you may not feel like hitting the gym at that time, and that’s okay, so give your body permission to get extra rest. Your sense of “get up and go” might just have “gotten up and went,” so allow extra time to finish what you need to as that work week wraps up. Chances are you’ll want to veg out and have a lazy weekend.

What Dreams Are Made Of: Venus and Mercury Conjunct Neptune

On February 21, Venus conjuncts Neptune, and Mercury follows suit four days later. These conjunctions lend themselves superbly well to writing poetry and ritual, not doing your taxes! Enjoy the Otherworldly vibes but make sure that your glasses aren’t too rose-colored.

Earth Energies to the Rescue!

All this Piscean energy can make one feel ungrounded and out of touch with practical affairs. Fortunately, the personal planets will each be sextiling both outer planet heavyweights, Saturn and Pluto in earthy Capricorn, in the final week of the month, giving the dreamy Neptunian vibes healthy reality checks and needed stability. Venus at 6° of Pisces sextiles Saturn at 6° of Capricorn on the 16th, demanding commitment in affairs of the heart and even thinking about long-term investments, whether in art or real estate. The Goddess of Love and Finances sextiles Pluto on the 27th, transforming our relationships from within for balancing out power dynamics and boosting our income as well.

Mercury sextiles Saturn on the 21st, helping us discern real from “fake news,” and pulling our heads out of the clouds long enough to read the fine print in any contracts that may be signed at that time. A slight window of opportunity exists for business negotiations. Mercury sextiles Pluto on the 28th, bringing revelations from the Deep, exposing secrets and deception. Pay attention.

The Pisces Sun sextiles Saturn in Capricorn on the 25th, anchoring us in good health and solidity.

Ending on a Note of Jupiterian Optimism

While some fireworks may ensue on the 25th when Venus squares Mars (delightful for the bedroom, maybe not the board room) and there is a chance for a war of words/dangerous rhetoric when Mercury squares Mars on the 28th, the month ends with the personal planets (Sun, Mercury, Venus) each making a lovely trine to Jupiter, infusing our watery world with sweetness and hopeful expectations.
