It’s an exciting time for the Fellowship of Isis (FOI) Chicago community—a network of FOI-chartered Lyceums, Iseums, and Temples dedicated to Polytheistic outreach and to carrying the ideological torches of Goddess worship, eco-spirituality, and interfaith ambassadorship as envisioned by co-founders Olivia Robertson, Lawrence Durdin-Robertson, and Pamela Durdin-Robertson in 1976—as we’ve lined up quite a roster of public ritual and educational events for the next few months. The biggest news is that our annual Goddess Convention, traditionally held at Autumn Equinox and which draws FOI members (and friends from related groups) from a variety of countries to convene in Chicago, is having its quarter-century anniversary this year! That’s 25 years of uninterrupted public festival service to the broader Pagan and occult communities; for my part, it’s been a very exciting 16 years of commitment, as I participated in my first FOI Goddess Convention back in 2002.
The purpose of the Convention is to energetically channel one major magico-spiritual theme and let it loose upon the world, anchored by the Deities Who are evoked to make that magic manifest. The theme is typically drawn from whichever of the late Rt. Rev. Lady Olivia Robertson’s written Divine Liturgy ceremonies, published in a variety of booklets for FOI clergy training, is performed. I’m pleased to announce that after our Chicago community’s voting process, the Divine Liturgy and thus the theme determined for this special 25th year is “The Mystical Awakening of Scorpio and Kundalini,” which is the ninth ritual from the clergy booklet Sophia, Cosmic Consciousness of the Goddess.
This Year’s Divine Liturgy / Main Ritual
Adhering to the well-known occult dictum, as expounded in the Emerald Tablet, of “As Above, So Below; As Within, So Without,” the effect of the kundalini awakening that the ritual engenders certainly transcends the personal sphere. Indeed, the evocation of Shakti as the Activating Principle of the Cosmos will ripple out through all the Worlds.
The ritual pays homage with religious devotion to Shakti and Lord Shiva as well as the Kemetic Deities Selket (She of the scorpion crown) and Ra. Additionally, each attendee will be alchemically initiated through the Mysteries of Scorpio via the constellation’s panoply of sacred fixed stars (especially Antares, the “heart” of the Scorpion), which the ancient Egyptians regarded as the oldest repository of souls.
The Mystery Play of this ritual narrates the ancient tale of the goddess Isis’ incarnation as a nursemaid among the court of the ancient Queen Astarte of Byblos, and Her (Isis’) attempt at gifting the child of the Queen with Immortality through Fire.
Fielding Workshops for the Day’s Event
In a spirit of esoteric knowledge-sharing for the broader metaphysical community, the Fellowship of Isis Chicago invites worldwide FOI members (clergy and laity) and friends from other occult organizations, hermetic traditions, etc. to consider leading a half-hour workshop to add to the spiritual energies of the day. The workshops may take the form of formal or informal presentations, meditations, yoga or dance activities, and short rituals. For example, last year our friends from the Chicago-based Aum-Ha Lodge of the O.T.O. had members present a wonderful chaos magic ritual that was aligned with the seasonal energies of Libra and the principle of ma’at.
For myself, I know I’m going to lead a workshop on the Kemetic goddess Selket, One of the Four Hallowed Protectors of the Dead, according to the third-millennium BCE Pyramid Texts (the other Three Protectors evoked in the Texts’ prayers being Isis, Nephthys, and Neith). If you plan on attending and you’d like to consider submitting a workshop idea, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or Archpriestess Demetria Nanos at email@example.com.
