Perhaps I should change the title of this post to read, “The Astrology of the Rest of the Month.” My participation in the amazing 9th United Astrology Conference, which ended on May 30, and subsequent life upheavals have delayed the writing of my monthly AstroCast column, a mass forecast relevant for all signs, by a good 12 days or so. But better late than never, eh? The transits in place as of today actually serve as a very good springboard for examining the overall theme of the month that I’m calling “Pulled Within,” as the Mars Retrograde and other key features of the month betoken an inner harnessing of the planetary energies. Let’s have a closer look.
Even though the Sun and Mercury are transiting through the Airy sign of Gemini, today’s chart shows a predominance of Water as an elemental energy expressed through several key planetary aspects. There is a loose but still quite potent Grand Trine in Water Signs, featuring Venus late in Her transit through Cancer trining Neptune at 16° of Pisces and trining Jupiter in 14° of Scorpio. This is exquisite energy for healing, especially psychological healing in the forms of talk therapy or even art therapy, as Venus and Neptune provide gentle emotional support for Jupiter in Scorpio to do His detective work deep in the Unconscious—plumbing the depths of a situation to bring the hidden, the suppressed, up into the light of conscious awareness.
Dreamy Neptune in Pisces squares the Sun and fact-finding Mercury in Gemini while sextiling the Taurus Moon today, suggesting that today is not the best day for rational decision-making. Factoring the imminence of the Mars Retrograde into the equation, we may be physically feeling sluggish and psychologically unmotivated to engage the world with our faculties of rational discourse. Just accept the fact that you’re not going to be “at your ‘A’ game” at work today and things will go much more smoothly. The Taurus Moon also pushes us into “creature comforts” mode and encourages us to go about our day slowly (even indolently), focusing on good food and other sensual indulgences. For those who engage in spirit work, mediumship, shamanic work, Witchcraft, or related magical pursuits, this is an outstanding time to contact your Gods, guides, and ancestors.
These Watery vibes get a bit of a boost tomorrow, June 12, when Mercury enters Cancer (3:00 p.m. CDT) for a transit that runs through June 28. Mercury in Cancer facilitates emotional expression and heightens our emotional sensitivity, often making us conflict-avoidant.
The following day, June 13, brings the Gemini New Moon at 2:43 p.m. CDT, though technically the Moon will be void-of-course. You may want to wait a few hours before engaging in any Lunar Esbat workings, but note that if you want to work with the Gemini/Elemental Air energy, you have a short window of time to do so as the Moon moves into Cancer on June 14 at 2:20 a.m. CDT. While in Gemini, the New Moon will trine Mars in Aquarius, highlighting out-of-the-box thinking in problem-solving and technological innovation. (The Shadow-side, of this, is the spike in cyber crimes such as hacking, as illustrated in this disturbing morning news headline.)
That afternoon, beguiling Venus adopts a show-stopping cocktail dress for Her ingress into the Fixed Fire Sign of Leo, which occurs at 4:54 p.m. CDT. Venus in Leo demands attention and the very best of everything (think Madonna in her “Material Girl” music video); She exudes theatrical flair in Her personal style, joyful creativity, and maternal ferocity.
This Fiery Presence of the Goddess of Love, Beauty, and Finances seems anomalously extroverted in comparison to the prevailing Watery energies, which are introverted and heighten an inner/microcosmic focus. And the Water energies receive an extra boost as the Sun enters Cancer on June 21 at 5:07 a.m. CDT, ushering in the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. What are the ways that you welcome or honor the energies of the longest day of the year?
Mars Retrograde in Aquarius
Five days later on June 26, Mars stations Retrograde at 9° of Aquarius at 4:04 p.m. He will spend several weeks in this Fixed Air sign, stationing Direct on August 28 after having back-tracked into 28° of Capricorn. A Mars Retrograde happens approximately every 25 months, and generally indicates a protracted period of stillness/lack of development in external events (depending, of course, on which House in your chart the Mars transit is happening). This can be extremely frustrating for many, as the experiences boil down to a perception that forward movement is halted in the area of your life that’s being affected—career goals, travel plans, relationships, whatever. During a Mars Retrograde, it’s advised that you postpone the launch of a business, real estate or other major transactions, even surgery (Mars rules surgical instruments).
As this is the God of War we’re talking about, we not only have to be mindful of our personal anger management issues, but on the world stage, be on the lookout for escalating military developments in conflict-ridden areas of the world. Retrograde Mars in Aquarius will be affected by the upcoming solar eclipse on July 27, as He will be sitting right on the nodal axis, and as Pyongyang is the city geographically situated squarely in the eclipse’s descent pattern, it will be likely that between the start of the Mars Retrograde on the 26th and the time of the eclipse exactly a month later, diplomatic talks will sour and the beating of war drums between the U.S. and North Korea will unfortunately grow louder. Mars Retrograde in Aquarius also governs war in its 21st-century form of cyber attacks and the criminal enterprise of hacking, both of which will increase due to Uranus’ recent ingress into Taurus, affecting cyber-currencies.
Mars Retrograde periods, in general, leave us feeling physically lethargic (all the more so given the heavy Neptunian energies I’ve described above) and low in the libido department or extremely sexually frustrated; these latter physical effects will be exacerbated by Mars’ square to Jupiter in the sexualized sign of Scorpio at the very outset of the Retrograde station on the 26th. However, you may be feeling the effects of this square weeks in advance. As always, step up your self-care regimen: make sure that you’re getting enough sleep, that you exercise caution while driving (avoid road rage or other altercations with strangers), and that you take time out for meditation and grounding and centering yourself—preferably outdoors because the natural world provides the best method of diffusing the electrifying Aquarian/Uranian energy.
Capricorn Full Moon
With the Sun in Cancer, the full moon of course will land in the sign of Cancer’s opposite sign, Capricorn. This takes place the night of June 27 at 11:53 p.m. Capricorn is an ambitious sign preoccupied with worldly status and climbing the heights in one’s chosen profession, so this is a good time to focus on any culminating points in your career development or to set your intentions for scaling the corporate ladder. All Saturnian themes get a green light at this time as well, so magical workings having to do with personal boundary-setting, with binding enemies, etc., are highly favored also.
The fleet-footed Messenger of the Gods bids adieu to the emotional Waters of Cancer and sparks new life into creative projects when He enters the Fixed Fire Sign of Leo on June 29 at 12:16 a.m. Mercury in Leo represents leadership acumen expressed through communications, but be sure to be a responsible leader and do not let your ego trample upon others. A king may need his subjects, but you don’t want to inspire a coup d’etat, so lead with Leo charm and magnanimity!
Have a great remainder of the month! As always, if you’d like me to take a detailed look at your chart, please email me at email@example.com. Thanks!
