Energetically speaking, astrological events this year have really forced us into a “review and release” mode as we evaluate our lives. This past summer was an extremely challenging period for many people (myself included), dominated as it was by the Mars Retrograde and the major shake-ups brought by the eclipses. Whether we were ready for it or not, we were tasked with major, even karmic, releases. Now the shift focuses on reviewing and reevaluating our lives, including how we attract or repel the forces of abundance, as the planet Venus gets ready to station Retrograde on October 5, plunging us into the archetypal experience I liken unto the Goddess Inanna’s Descent into the Underworld.
Venus Retrograde in Scorpio and Libra: October 5 to November 16, 2018
While the time Venus spends in Retrograde motion is roughly 40 days, when we consider the planet’s Shadow periods spent preparing for Retrograde and emerging from it, we’re looking at a four-month period in which the Retrograde lessons will be prominent in our lives, not a 6-week period. Of course, the House where Venus is transiting in your natal chart (contact me if you’d like to know where that is) will determine the themes/areas of life experience that will be especially impacted, whether career, family life, or education, etc. For example, the Venus Retrograde period, which begins in Scorpio, will occur in my 9th House of Expanded Horizons, so I’m definitely going to be focusing on reevaluating my goals in education, publishing, long-distance travel, etc. Here’s the chart for when Venus stations Retrograde at 10° of Scorpio on the 5th:
No matter what Sign or House Venus Retrogrades occur in, there are lessons that are dramatically enforced in these areas:
- We have to review our ABUNDANCE PARADIGMS. What beliefs, often limiting ones, did you inherit from your parents/family—or perhaps even your spiritual tradition—that may be crippling your ability to receive abundance today? Were you taught that money is “evil,” or that it’s “not spiritual” to live abundantly? Those beliefs, usually transmitted to us in early childhood, can continue to wreak havoc on our abilities to manifest wealth and well-being if we don’t root them out and expose them for the limiting forms of mental conditioning that they are. Venus Retrograde periods afford us the chance to evaluate how we really think and feel about abundance, which is about so much more than “money.”
- We ought to work on our SELF-ESTEEM. It’s not hard to see how the limiting beliefs in childhood can adversely impact our self-esteem years later in life, by which time some of us may have convinced ourselves that we’re “not worthy” to receive the material blessings the Universe abundantly supplies. Venus Retrograde periods are ideal times to engage in Shadow work, and you can define what that means for you: Does it mean working one-on-one with a clinical therapist to clear limiting beliefs and heal from trauma? Does it mean doing solitary or group ritual to compost your psychic garbage? The methods of doing this work are limited only by your imagination. Positive affirmations can be as simple as quoting the L’ORÉAL Paris advertising slogan from the 80s and 90s: “BECAUSE I’M WORTH IT!”
- We should be SPENDING CONSERVATIVELY. Venus rules our pocketbooks and bank balances, and Her Retrograde periods are times we should really be reevaluating the health of our personal or family finances. Do you have a budget? Is it working for you? What tweaks need to be made? What is your debt-to-income ratio? If you’re living outside of your means, what steps can you take to curb that behavior ASAP? Do you save money or live paycheck-to-paycheck with nothing left over each month? Do you have disposable income to allocate to savings? How about an emergency fund? If you work for an employer that provides retirement benefits like a 401(k) plan, have you checked on its performance lately? Venus Retrograde periods are not the time to consider launching a new business, buying a house, or making any big-ticket, especially luxury item, purchases. The art investment you thought looked so wonderful during the Retrograde period just might strike you as hideous once Venus stations Direct: Our perceptions get clouded and swindling can happen during business deals, so tread carefully.
- Caution is also advised for AFFAIRS OF THE HEART. Dating can be enjoyable during a Venus Retrograde period, but don’t commit to a partnership until after Venus exits Her Shadow period in mid-December. Again, our perceptions are clouded and people may not be presenting themselves to us honestly. For committed couples experiencing turbulence in their relationships, Venus Retrograde periods are excellent for going to couples’ counseling and evaluating issues from the past that haven’t been dealt with. Past lovers can also show up again during a Venus Retrograde period, and that’s up to you to decide whether the flame is worth reigniting or if things are better left the way they are with a healthy distance between you two.
Other Key Planetary Transits for October
On Monday, October 8, fleet-footed Mercury leaves equitable Libra for the intense Fixed Waters of Scorpio, where He journeys until Halloween, opposing volatile Uranus in Taurus right out of the starting gate. The next three days can be ones of wielding words as weapons, with vicious arguments popping up quite unexpectedly, so walk away from escalating situations and be cautious in your travels at this time. Do not engage in altercations with strangers: think twice before giving that jerk truck driver who cut you off on the expressway your single-finger salute during your fit of road rage.
Libra New Moon: Monday, October 8, 10:47 p.m. CDT
As Mercury makes His ingress into Scorpio, the New Moon at 15° Libra takes place amidst cosmic and Earthly backdrops of power struggles and the need to discern truth from illusion, as the Moon makes a quincunx to deceptive Neptune at 14° of Pisces and the Libra Sun builds in a powerful, potentially tumultuous square to Pluto in Capricorn—exact on October 11, the same day that Mars in Aquarius forms an exact square to Retrograde Venus in Scorpio. These squares will release tense, built-up energy explosively, and the news headlines will certainly offer more than their share of drama. Ground and center yourselves accordingly during this intense time.
On October 15, Mercury at 7° of Scorpio forms a conjunction with Retrograde Venus at 9° of Scorpio. This energy gives a Voice to the Dark Goddess. What is She going to be crying out from the recesses of Her wildness? Mercury, Retrograde Venus, and Jupiter are all immersed in Scorpio’s Fixed Waters of powerful emotional depth and scrutiny. What we’ve consciously suppressed and unconsciously repressed will be bubbling up to the surface. Get ready.
Spiritual communication receives a boost on October 19 when Mercury at 15° Scorpio forms a trine with Neptune at 14° Pisces. While this can be great energy for ritual, spirit work, shamanic journeying, writing poetry, and receiving messages from your dreams, it’s not good energy for focus in the mundane world, and there are overtones of deception from others. Beware of too-good-to-be-true sales pitches and schedule business negotiations for another day. Since Mercury will also be forming a square to Mars at 14° of Aquarius at the same time, this day might also result in more news headlines related to cyber-attacks or data breaches. Guard against theft as best as you can. Change your passwords to key online accounts.
The Sun enters the Fixed Water Sign of Scorpio on October 23 at 6:22 a.m. CDT, and right at the outset, it opposes Uranus at 0° of Taurus. The energies will definitely evoke a feeling of acute restlessness as the sky gears up for Taurus Full Moon fireworks the following day.
Full Moon at 7° of Taurus: Wednesday, October 24, 11:45 a.m. CDT
This Taurus Full Moon will be conjunct explosive Uranus and both planets will be opposing the Scorpio Sun and Retrograde Venus at 4° of Scorpio. The Uranian influence will vie for freedom at all levels, challenging Scorpio’s obsessive need for control. Emotional freedom. Spiritual freedom. Physical freedom. What pre-Halloween tricks and treats will this bring to your doorstep?
The good news is that Retrograde Venus in Scorpio will be sextiling stern Saturn in Capricorn, and Saturn, in turn, will be forming a trine to Uranus, adding the desire to keep structures in place as well as a level of emotional stability—or perhaps added stubbornness! After all, Taurus and Scorpio are the two most stubborn Signs (it makes sense as they are Fixed Earth and Fixed Water, respectively). It’s certainly going to be a memorable moon!
Other Transits to Round Out the Month
The latter half of the month will be much smoother than the first half, overall, but the waning days of October bring a smattering of heavy-hitting planetary transits. From October 27 to 29, the Dark Goddess energy I’ve mentioned above in reference to Retrograde Venus in Scorpio gets amplified by Mercury at 25° of Scorpio forming a tight conjunction with Jupiter at 27° of Scorpio. This will lead to the exposure of more truths, information coming to light to expose the abuses of power and assault on the vulnerable. The #MeToo movement’s chorus of voices will keep growing louder. The Dark Goddess in Her rage howls forcefully and everyone in the corridors of power will have to take notice. During this time, Mercury will also be forming a trine with the planetoid Chiron, the Wounded Healer, now in a Retrograde transit at 28° of Pisces, helping us to articulate and process our deep woundedness.
On the night of October 30, 11:38 CDT to be exact, Mercury leaves Fixed Water for Mutable Fire and makes His ingress into the expansive, optimistic, adventure-loving realms of Sagittarius.
Mercury in Sagittarius is not the most detail-oriented placement, but one ideally suited for long-range planning, big-picture thinking, brainstorming, international commerce, long-distance travel, academia, philosophical and religious thinking, and cultivating a cosmopolitan attitude. Provincialism and dogmatic thinking simply won’t do.
On October 31, Halloween here in the U.S. and elsewhere, the Dark Goddess again rises to the forefront of our minds and hearts and finds Her echoes in transiting Venus’ movements once again. While backtracking into the 0° of Scorpio, Venus forms an exact opposition to Uranus at 0° of Taurus before She Retrogrades into Libra, Her home sign, later that day at 2:42 p.m. CDT. The opposition to Taurus can bring a flare-up of emotional upheaval or perhaps sexual fireworks, but it’s not a good time to make any changes with your money. The financial markets will have their hiccups, perhaps drastic ones in a short period of time, so watch the news.
When Venus Retrogrades back into Libra, we will have the chance, collectively, to review where we fall short in achieving our ideals of social justice, equality, and the fair distribution of resources. It’s no accident that my fellow Americans and I will be going to the polls for mid-term elections on November 6 while Retrograde Venus transits Libra. Does the Dark Goddess vote? You better effing believe it!
Have a safe and wonderful month and a very Happy Halloween / Blessed Samhain to all who celebrate! If you’d like me to take a detailed look at how these transits will affect your individual chart, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you!
