Happy New Year, gentle reader! January is one of the best/most positively powerful months of 2019. Its firepower, evident from a powerful stellium of five planets in Capricorn at the time of the Capricorn New Moon/Partial Solar Eclipse the night of January 5th, builds the framework for the triple super conjunction of Saturn-Jupiter-Pluto in Capricorn that will occur in January of 2020. Capricorn’s ruling planet, stable and serious Saturn, tests the mettle of our projects and goals to determine their worth for implementation (should we even bother?) and chances of long-term viability (to reap major rewards for work well done over the long haul). New Year’s Day, the Capricorn New Moon/Partial Solar Eclipse on January 5, and the conjunction between the Sun and Pluto in Capricorn on January 11 are what I’m calling the three most crucial Power Days of the Month, whose energies you would be well advised to capitalize upon to execute your goals.
We will all be feeling motivated to push forward and excel, thanks to the drive of fiery Mars rejoicing at having entered His home sign of Aries on New Year’s Eve, 2018. And once electrifying Uranus stations Direct in the last degree of Aries on the afternoon of January 6, ALL OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM’S PLANETS WILL BE MOVING DIRECT UNTIL THE FIRST WEEK OF MARCH. THIS IS THE MOST AUSPICIOUS WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR: BE LIKE THE CAPRICORN GOAT AND SCALE NEW HEIGHTS!
Please note: All times given below reflect Central Standard Time. Adjust accordingly for your time zone.
Key Planetary Transits and Aspects
The fireworks begin on New Year’s Day as the Sun and Saturn form an exact conjunction at 11° of Capricorn at 11:50 p.m. CST. The numerologically inclined will note the auspiciousness of the “master number” of 11 for this conjunction’s degree mark. Our personal energy reserves receive a major boost with a focus on endurance and psychological tenacity. This is a fantastic day to make changes that optimize your health and well-being, and I’m not just talking about keeping New Year’s resolutions of “eating healthier” or “exercising more” top of mind. I’m talking about your overall life satisfaction. What isn’t working for you? Capricorn, like its sister Earth Sign of Virgo, excels at realistically recognizing and swiftly cutting away with a surgeon’s accuracy (think of the Roman God Saturn’s scythe!) any and all impediments that stand in the way of living your best life. Examine all aspects of your life and commit to a massive decluttering at all levels. Fellow witches, Pagans, and magicians: how about devising a ritual in honor of this commitment? You may want to incorporate the astrological glyph of Saturn somehow:
On Thursday, January 3, Mercury in the final degree of Sagittarius forms a trine with Retrograde Uranus in the final degree of Aries. This can evoke lightning bolts of innovation, novel solutions to a problem, or very welcome news out of nowhere. It can stir a sense of restlessness, even mental agitation or mania, and a desire to take a short trip on a whim. The very next day, Mercury leaves Mutable Fire and makes His ingress into the Cardinal Earth of Capricorn (at 9:40 p.m. CST), getting ready to add His mental agility to long-range planning and a focus on financial success to the stellium of planets in Capricorn that will kick the first New Moon and Solar Eclipse of the year into high gear on January 5.
Jan. 5: Capricorn New Moon and Partial Solar Eclipse
This extremely powerful New Moon and Partial Solar Eclipse occurs at 15° of Capricorn and will be exact at 7:28 p.m. CST. Note the stellium of 5 heavenly bodies (in House 5 in the chart below) that are the major players for this event: the Capricorn Sun and Moon, plus Mercury, Saturn, and powerful Pluto.
This isn’t going to be your typical New Moon: you’re not just setting your intentions for the lunation to come; you’re also setting your intention for the next six months (influence of the Solar Eclipse) and even next year’s mega-conjunction of Pluto-Jupiter-Saturn in Capricorn! Whichever House this New Moon/Solar Eclipse is occurring in your chart informs you of the life area that is up for a Cosmic “refresh” button hit. In general, this dynamic celestial event will be asking us all about where we are applying our energy (especially when it comes to making money or achieving our career goals) and whether or not it’s worth it/generates true ROI for us. We are called to formulate strategies and work on our self-mastery, especially considering that the North Node in 26° Cancer, opposite the Capricorn stellium of planets, tasks us with nurturing ourselves first. Self-care has to be the foundation of whatever goals and plans we chart for improving our lives, financially and otherwise.
Creative Visioning is given a boost at this powerful New Moon/Solar Eclipse with the Capricorn Sun’s sextile to dreamy Neptune at 14° of Pisces. Meditation, ritual, spirit communications, creating works of art: these are all ideal activities aligned with this powerful influx of energies that welcome new beginnings. What will you create?
Opportune Planetary Aspects and Transits
Fair Venus changes out of Her soggy clothes after an especially long transit in Scorpio’s obsessive Fixed Water and puts on her red-hot salsa dancing dress as She enters the Mutable Fire sign of Sagittarius on January 7 at 5:19 a.m. CST.
Venus in Sagittarius favors diplomacy in business, especially commercial transactions between different cultures or geographical regions of the world, and adopts a fun and freewheeling attitude of exploration and freedom in romantic matters. Her mantra really could be the title of the old Roy Rogers country song, “Don’t Fence Me In.”
As She moves Direct in the optimistic, generous, travel- and adventure-seeking sign of Sagittarius, She will eventually form an exact conjunction at 16° of Sagittarius with jolly and expansive Jupiter, the ruling planet of Sagittarius, on Tuesday, January 22, at exactly 6:26 a.m. CST. MARK THIS DAY ON YOUR CALENDAR! This is another stupendously amazing day with social, financial, commercial, artistic, travel-related, and romantic blessings being dispensed all around. If you’re a Sagittarius or you have Venus in Sagittarius and you’re planning a Winter wedding for early 2019, this is THE day to get married! Even though this conjunction is exact on the 22nd, you may feel its benevolent effects a few days before or after. Fortunately, the good vibes will linger for a couple of days, so make the most of them!
As mentioned in this post’s Overview, the Sun will conjunct Pluto at 20° of Capricorn on Friday, January 11, exact at 5:38 a.m. CST. This is an extremely powerful day: make use of this energy for self-transformation! How can you “level up”? In what ways can you reinvent yourself to cultivate or augment your innate leadership abilities, or be seen as an authoritative figure in a specific area of expertise? Agile-thinking Mercury will lend His gifts of mental focus and a golden tongue to this aspect when He forms an exact conjunction with grounded, long-term-minded Saturn on Sunday, January 13, exact at 7:31 a.m. CST. Long-range planning is highly favored now, as are business negotiations (especially real estate transactions) on either Friday the 11th or Monday the 14th.
Romantic fireworks are assured with a Fire Trine between Venus at 12° of Sagittarius and Mars at 12° of Aries on Friday, January 18. While the Trine is exact at 10:49 in the morning, it will permeate the entire weekend, making for very enjoyable date nights or even sessions of painting or music-making, as Mars can fuel the Venusian impulse to make beautiful works of art.
Business negotiations, the signing of contracts, writing for business or pleasure, and gleaning psychological epiphanies will also be happening on January 18 thanks to a conjunction between Mercury and Pluto at 21° of Capricorn. All communications come from a deep place of personal integrity, creating win-win situations. So yes, go ahead and ask for that well-deserved raise!
Jan. 20: The Leo Super Moon Total Lunar Eclipse
The Sun exits Capricorn and enters Aquarius at 3 a.m. on Sunday, January 20.
The Sun’s annual transit through the Fixed Air sign of Aquarius shines the spotlight on the themes of humanitarianism, social equality and social justice, idealism fueled by technological innovation, progress, eccentricity, and prioritizing the group mind over the individual consciousness. Speaking as a Double Aquarius myself (Ascendant and Moon Sign), I can affirm that Aquarians are people who love and generally believe in their fellow humans (indeed, all species, really!) and want the best for all, for people to really have the freedom to be the highest and truest versions of themselves. We’re a quirky bunch, paradoxically known for being highly intellectual and open-minded, very much living in our heads 24/7, but being quite inflexible when it comes to being asked to revise the ideas that we hold dear and wish to champion. Ah well. “No need to be anybody but oneself,” to quote Aquarian author Virginia Woolf.
Since every month’s Full Moon is always opposite the sign the Sun is in, January’s Full Moon will be at 0° of Leo (a Super Moon, meaning it will be visibly larger due to its closer proximity to the Earth) the night of January 20, exact at 11:16 p.m. CST. This Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse, which, incidentally, will be totally visible throughout North and South America, is certainly powerful enough on its own. However, some potentially challenging aspects are going to make it quite the interesting “detonation event,” as I refer to total lunar eclipses.
First, there is the influence of the Sun’s square to Uranus in the final degree of Aries; this aspect was exact on Friday, January 18, when the Sun was still in Capricorn, but it will still be injecting a profound Wild Card energy at the time of the Total Lunar Eclipse, with an emphasis on accidents, injuries, and even electrical fires. Be careful!
Additionally, on the day of the eclipse, Venus at 14° of Sagittarius will be forming an exact square to illusion-weaving Neptune at 14° of Pisces, casting a pall of confusion or even outright deception in relationships, which manifest in various ways, from people misrepresenting who they are on dates to committed partners cheating on each other and lying about it. Keep your eyes open and if someone seems to good to be true, they probably are. Don’t let yourself be duped!
This eclipse will really emphasize endings and completions because it’s the final one of the Leo-Aquarius eclipse axis that began in 2017. What are you ready to bid farewell to that was seeded in your life at that time but which has proven itself to be of no use to you any longer, two years down the road? Is it a relationship that is past its expiration date? Is it a toxic job you’ve kept yourself attached to just for the paycheck, even though your well-being has paid a far worse price for staying? Is it a self-sabotaging behavior, addiction, or limiting belief? Leo demands that we see ourselves as the Queens and Kings of our Universes and anything that inhibits our individual sovereignty and self-expression, certainly our happiness, needs to be nuked out of our lives with high Leo flair. Remember: Total lunar eclipses eclipse people, places, and situations from our lives, so whatever gets eclipsed from your life within 90 days of this Leo Super Moon is for your highest good.
It can be a time of high emotion. When it comes to expressing your feelings, be mindful that you keep your own anger in check, as the day after the eclipse features an incredibly nasty square between Mars at 13° of Aries and Saturn at 13° of Capricorn.
This square, unfortunately, is the recipe for physical violence of the most extreme sort as well as of accidents and injuries that may involve the head, so please exercise extreme caution while driving or using mass transit and under no circumstances should you engage in altercations with strangers! Unfortunately, the timing of this square is Monday morning, setting a very bad start to the work week. Be mindful of meetings that can veer off into argumentative downward spirals. Don’t engage in the drama. If at all possible, schedule important meetings with clients or arrange for your own job interview to fall on Friday the 25th instead, whose planetary energy will be lovely!
Other Dates with Cautionary Energies
Beware of hot-headedness and impulsive arguments, road rage episodes, or bad business negotiations on Tuesday, January 8. This is when Mercury at 4° of Capricorn squares Mars at 4° of Aries, injecting a vein of irritability and extreme impatience in the work day.
This is not the day to ask the boss for a raise. However, if your business has a lot of competitors in your field, this could prove to be a fruitful day to convene in a “war room” (every advertising agency I’ve ever worked at had one!) and formulate new strategies to outpace, outwit, and outspend your rivals. Be mindful of your tone when communicating, and it might be a good idea to back up your files on your hard drive as well.
On Sunday, January 13, Jupiter at 14° of Sagittarius forms an exact square with Neptune at 14° of Pisces at 12:58 a.m. CST. Both of these powerful planets are in their Home signs, making this square that much more firmly entrenched in its tense energies.
The cautions surrounding this square pertain to several things: taking on more projects than you’re realistically capable of handling (Jupiter squares can make us feel overconfident), falling prey to other peoples’ deception or even being the victim of a crime (especially theft, and the loss of valuables can unfortunately be on a grand scale), or, psychologically, crossing into codependent territory under the misguided belief that you can fix, rescue, or save a person (with substance abuse problems, most likely) who needs to be working on his or her own self-mastery!
This square will return two more times this year: June 16 and September 21. Mark those dates in your day planner and mind these cautions again.
On Wednesday, January 23, Mercury in the final degree of Capricorn squares Uranus, stationed Direct as of January 6, in the final degree of Aries.
I interpret this square’s caution as having not so much to do with physical injury, although electrocution is one manifestation of this energy, as much as I see it having to do with triggering acute anxiety attacks and mental instability. Bad squares involving the planet Uranus have an adverse effect on our nervous system, so high blood pressure, hyperventilation, panic attacks, etc., can erupt at this time, either in tandem with stressful events or on their own with no external stimuli. The experience can be extremely distressing, erupting seemingly from nowhere because previously you’d been feeling just fine, so be mindful of this and take self-care breaks as necessary. At night, this aspect will likely cause insomnia because of the mental restlessness so be extra gentle with yourself and wind down from electronic stimuli a couple of hours before you plan on going to bed to help mitigate the phenomenon of “Monkey Mind.” This happens in the middle of the work week and can make Thursday the 24th feel wretched. It is what it is.
Sweet Aspects and Transits Close Out the Month
Fortunately, the final week of January plays out well in terms of planetary happenings. On Wednesday, January 23, Mercury joins the Sun and enters the Fixed Air sign of Aquarius at 11:49 p.m. CST.
Less preoccupied with details, Mercury in Aquarius likes to focus on broad strategies, novel ideas, and out-of-the-box thinking. Mercury’s transits in Aquarius can lead to scientific breakthroughs and technological innovations.
Friday, January 25, is going to be one of the most positive days of the month. Action-oriented Mars at 16° of Aries forms a Fiery Trine to jovial Jupiter 16° of Sagittarius; the Trine is exact at 11:53 a.m. CST.
Whether you choose to implement this energy of expansion and success for work or for play, you can’t lose! This is a fantastic way to end the work week! Seal the deal, land the job, buy the house, work up the nerve to ask that person out on a date, and yes, TREAT YO’ SELF! Enjoy the good vibrations with great company: this is absolutely a time for being social, celebrating, and feeling great!
On Tuesday, January 29, the Sun and Mercury will be conjunct at 9° of Aquarius. This is a day for marching to your own beat, celebrating your uniqueness, and maybe even receiving lightning bolts of inspiration out of the blue. Keep a notebook handy to jot down all your brilliant ideas!
The last day of the month will have Saturn at 14° of Capricorn form a benevolent sextile to Neptune at 14° of Pisces. This will be a very pleasant Thursday, one that has people bringing visions down to earth, taking ideas that seem improbable into manifestation in a spirit of support and cooperation. This sextile will repeat itself on June 18 and November 8, so circle those days in your calendar and expect good things!
Once the Leo Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse on January 20 clears out the Leo-Aquarius eclipse cycle that began in 2017, the focus will be on the eclipse axis of Capricorn and Cancer. The axis formed by these opposing signs in our Zodiac is an extremely important one. In the ancient Mediterranean world, it was known as the “gateway of souls,” as Cancer occupies the northern extremities and Capricorn the southern extremities of the Milky Way of our galaxy; in the theological beliefs comprising the Mystery Religion of the Persian-Roman savior God, Mithras, for example, incarnating souls were thought to enter through the Tropic of Cancer and exit this world through the Tropic of Capricorn.
Thus, this eclipse cycle that will be with us for roughly the next two years will bring events into our lives that feel especially fated. Set your intentions and pay attention to what shows up, what gets “eclipsed,” and pay even closer attention to how you show up. The eclipses in Capricorn charge us with the task of achieving the highest levels possible of self-mastery. Blessings on you as you do the Work!
