This second month of 2019 harnesses the explosive power wrought from January’s eclipse season to help us fashion the outcomes we want across many aspects of our lives. It’s a month for taking decisive action. The extremely wonderful astrology news is that this month has three times the sweet planetary aspects compared to a handful of challenging ones, encouraging us all to have faith in ourselves and the Cosmos and move forward in executing our goals. This is not a “wait and see” nor a seed-time/Visioning month. All systems are go, and it behooves us to seize the momentum during this short window of opportunity when all planets are still moving direct.
Note: All times given for planetary aspects and transits reflect my time zone of Central Standard Time (CST). Please adjust for your time zone accordingly.
Major Cautionary Energy at the Outset and Venus’ Grounding Grace
The month opens with the exact square between Mars at 21° of Aries and Pluto at 21° of Capricorn (it’s exact on the 1st at 9:15 p.m. CST). Note that both planets are in their home signs. This is a very challenging aspect, a square between the ancient Greek God of War and the Lord of the Underworld.
Power struggles have been one manifestation, and the contentious, even violent, political landscapes of many countries—from the ongoing government shutdown here in the U.S. to the right-wing fueled (U.S.-backed) riots in Venezuela to the Brexit debacle in the U.K.—attest to this nasty square. This aspect fuels physical death as well, especially from violent accidents or injuries in which head trauma plays an important factor, so I advise everyone to please exercise caution in their daily routines for the next 10 days, especially when traveling.
The saving grace, as it were, to this aspect comes from Venus’ entry into the Cardinal Earth Sign of Capricorn on February 3rd (at 4:30 p.m. CST). Venus in Capricorn is steadfastly pragmatic and concerned with ROI, not just in terms of business endeavors but affairs of the heart as well. What is worth my time, energy, resources, and heart? She asks. She will clear away without a moment’s hesitation anything or anyone who fails to make the grade.
As Saturn—Capricorn’s ruling planet—and Pluto draw ever nearer in Capricorn (Saturn will be catching up to Pluto’s station) and steadily prepare us all for their life-altering conjunction, which will be exact on January 11, 2020 (with Jupiter thrown into the mix for expansive power), Venus will become sandwiched between these no-nonsense planets throughout February. Everything we hope to achieve has to be grounded in reality in order for it to work. The trifecta of Saturn, Pluto, and now Venus in Capricorn won’t indulge wishful thinking. We guard our hearts and our pocketbooks, making investments in love or in business only when we are assured of the commitments, loyalty, and long-term growth that we will reap as dividends.
On February 3rd, there is another extremely sweet aspect of a sextile between Mercury at 21° of the Fixed Air Sign of Aquarius and jolly Jupiter at 18° of the Mutable Fire Sign of Sagittarius. (It’s exact at 3:55 p.m. CST.) This aspect can bring innovative solutions to long-standing problems as well as favorable business negotiations for the ensuing business week. As both planetary energies are related to travel and the expansion of one’s horizons, this is also an optimal time to take a vacation and explore someplace new. (Just mind the cautions about the Mars-Pluto square!)
Aquarius New Moon/Chinese Lunar New Year of the Pig
The festive Chinese Lunar New Year of the Earth Pig is ushered in by the Aquarius New Moon on February 4 (exact at 3:04 p.m. CST). The Moon and Sun will be at 15° of Aquarius, both within a 4-degree orb of conjunction to Mercury, and all three will be forming a benevolent sextile to Jupiter in Sagittarius. This is an optimal time to launch your business or a website, to kick off a campaign or to brainstorm ideas for one, to make use of the currents of innovation that will be swirling around. Aquarius energy is literally electric, inspiring, and future-oriented. It champions technological innovation and when combined with the expansive energy of Jupiter, revolutionary changes can happen. Again, this is not the time to dream, but do!
Here is my chart for the event, set to Chicago time. Note the stellium of planets in Capricorn making sure that whatever ideas we champion can pass needed reality checks first. Saturn in Capricorn will be in a sextile to dreamy Neptune in Pisces at the time of this powerful New Moon, helping us to take our ideas from the Void and put them into Form so we can take action!
After the upheavals of last month’s eclipse cycle, this New Moon will be very healing and can bring us a sense of “wiping the slate clean.” If you didn’t like how the year began on January 1, this is your chance to have a do-over! Make ritual use of it. For practicing Pagans who observe the Celtic Fire Festival of Imbolc, why not time your solitary or group ritual to this New Moon? I daresay the Goddess Brigid would surely approve!
Riding the coat-tails of this auspicious event, we have, on Thursday the 7th, two very auspicious sextiles. The first is the exact sextile of the Aquarius Sun to Jupiter in Sagittarius, bringing optimism, the concern for promoting the welfare of others (Aquarius is a humanitarian sign), innovative thinking, and acute personal eccentricities to the fore. Our nervous systems may get a bit of a jolt, so if you feel restless or experience insomnia the days before or after the New Moon, use the background Capricorn energy of Earth to ground yourself.
The second sextile is between fleet-footed Mercury at 21° of Aquarius to ego-identified Mars at 23° of Aries. Take action by believing in yourself is the message of this sextile. Out-of-the-box thinking will get you far. This energy will also be present on the 9th, when, at 4:53 p.m., Mercury in the final (29°) degree of Aquarius will sextile Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, in the final degree (29°) of Aries. Intellectual quantum leaps can be possible at this time but there may be hiccups in the electronic trading of commodities and stocks so the news headlines of the world’s financial markets will be very interesting to watch. Unpredictable Uranus can bring high levels of instability, but this energy is highly exhilarating for creative pursuits.
Mercury Enters Pisces
Quick-witted Mercury, Ruler of the Mutable Air Sign of Gemini and the Mutable Earth Sign of Virgo, enters the Mutable Water Sign of Pisces on Sunday the 10th (4:51 a.m. CST).
Mercury is going to be transiting Pisces for a whopping 9 weeks due to its forthcoming Retrograde in Pisces, which officially begins in March but whose Retrograde Shadow period will commence on February 18. That’s when we may start to experience a slow-down in our linear thought processes/discursive thinking (feel “foggy-headed”), experience miscommunication with others, and encounter difficulties with traveling or with making large purchases. Worse yet, since Pisces is known for trafficking in illusions, among other things, we may find ourselves being on the receiving end of deception from others (especially with signing contracts, wherein we neglect the all-important function of reading the fine print or have that fine print misleadingly presented or obfuscated from our scrutiny).
Mercury transiting Pisces makes us wistfully daydream during business meetings and other situations we begrudgingly put up with, urging us into flights of fancy and mental escapism. We toss our Excel spreadsheets aside for a moment, feeling the urge to jot down words to a poem. At a deeper spiritual level, Mercury in Pisces is excellent for ritual trance work, for contacting spirits and other Holy Powers, and for receiving spirit communications in our dreams. Psychic intuition gets augmented. It would be a very good idea to keep a dream journal (if you don’t already do so) to record what messages you receive in your subconscious for the duration of this transit.
The Sun will enter the Mutable Waters of Pisces on Monday, February 18, at 5:04 p.m. CST, further dunking us into Otherworldly currents.
While the pull towards spiritual epiphanies and mystical pursuits will appeal to many, so will the mundane activities of escapism through alcohol and drugs. People with substance abuse problems who have their Sun or Ascendant in Pisces can really struggle with sobriety during the next four weeks.
The Virgo Full Moon (Another Supermoon)
The opposite of Pisces in the Zodiac is the Mutable Earth Sign of Virgo, and since Full Moons are always oppositions to whatever sign the Sun is in, this Supermoon (the second consecutive one to appear in a full moon this year) on the morning of Tuesday, February 19, is a Virgo Full Moon. The Moon will enter Virgo at 8:47 a.m. CST and will reach its apogee of Fullness (at 0º) at 9:54 a.m. Please have a look at the chart I’ve devised:
There’s going to be a lot of Earthy support for this Moon, and people with their natal Sun, Ascendant, or Moon in any of the Earth Signs—Virgo, Taurus, Capricorn—are going to benefit the most from this Supermoon Full Moon, energetically speaking. Feisty Mars leaves behind his home sign of Aries and enters the Fixed Earth Sign of Taurus on February 14 (at 4:51 a.m.), adding Taurean stability and sensuality to the Grand Trine in Earth Signs that will be underway at the Full Moon, giving a hearty bear hug to the Virgo Moon and to the large stellium of planets—Saturn, Venus, Pluto, and the South Node—in Capricorn. While Virgo likes to tirelessly perfect Herself in the interests of service to others and in Her own personal health regimen, the energies surrounding this Moon are definitely geared towards Abundance and Manifesting Prosperity in addition to Healing.
The Visionary backdrop to this Moon begins at 12:37 a.m., when Mercury and Neptune will be in a 1° orb of conjunction (16°/15°) in Pisces. Again, for practicing Pagans, Witches, Magicians, Shamans, and other magically-minded folk, this is prime ritual energy when communication from or with The Beyond will be practically effortless, so don’t waste this mojo! Hours later (at 8:39 p.m. CST, to be exact), Mercury will form a sextile to serious Saturn in Capricorn, again, helping us learn how to take our ideas from the Void and give them tangible Form. The spiritual will be made concrete.
Other Key Planetary Aspects of the Month
There’s some cautionary energy to note a few days before this healing Virgo Full Moon. Before Mars enters Taurus, He will be in the final degree (29°) of Aries, forming an exact conjunction with Uranus in the final degree of Aries on February 13 (exact at 12:19 a.m.). People may experience a great deal of agitation and restlessness, especially if their natal Sun or Ascendant is Aries or Aquarius, in the build-up to this conjunction, which adds a discordant, even combustible, note to the otherwise mellow Pisces energy and the grounded Capricorn energy.
Again, this energy heralds an extreme caution to personal safety: beware of accidents (involving the head), even electrical fires or electrocution. Under no circumstances should you engage in road rage or any form of an altercation with strangers. Situations can escalate into deadly physical violence within seconds; don’t be caught off guard. This will be the last Mars-Uranus conjunction in Aries in our lifetimes, as Uranus will enter Taurus in early March and will stay there until 2026; Uranus won’t circle back and transit Aries again until the year 2111!
Fortunately, Venus lends Her grace and diplomacy with two wonderfully sweet aspects that occur after the explosive Mars-Uranus conjunction and before the Sun enters Pisces on the 18th. The first is a sextile that Venus in Capricorn makes to dreamy Neptune in Pisces on Sunday the 17th; while it’s exact in the wee hours, at 2:45 a.m., it will lend an air of enchantment and inspiration for artistic pursuits or romance for the entire day. The following morning (4:52 CST, to be precise), Venus will form an exact conjunction with Saturn at 16° of Capricorn. If prospective romantic partners can pass needed reality checks (are they who they present themselves to be?), Venus and Saturn encourage us to open our hearts and to celebrate shared visions of long-term commitment, loyalty, and affection.
If you’re not keen on romance but on business matters, since this conjunction happens on a Monday, this would be an excellent time to ask for a raise, solicit venture capital funding, or invest your money in slower-growing but stable mutual funds and bonds or especially real estate! Saturn is all about the long-term equity real estate investments can bring and Venus rules interior design, among other beauty-related fields, so how about using this energy to purchase a fixer-upper house and start working on remodeling? The investment of funds, resources, and effort will be worth it!
Chiron Enters Aries
Known as a Dwarf Planet to some or as an Asteroid to others, the planetoid of Chiron will leave Pisces and enter Aries on February 18 for a transit that lasts until the year 2027. Chiron, the Wounded Healer, represents our core psychological wounds—that which stays with us our entire lives, which no amount of medication or talk therapy can banish. As we grow older, we hopefully learn to better live with our woundedness, but Chiron represents the part of us that’s never fully integrated as a result.
Since Aries represents the Self, this will be an eight-year transit that calls us to deep Self-Healing, facilitated by breakthroughs (Aries) in conventional medicine and complementary or alternative therapies. What needs healing within you? As you work on healing it, how can you be the Wounded Healer who helps others manage a similar core wound? Those are the challenges posed by this transit.
February 22: A Major Power Day!
Circle this date on your calendar as it is a highly auspicious Friday for releasing impactful communications into the world: your digital marketing, your PR, your website will receive a profound one-two boost from two very key planetary aspects. While the 3° Pisces Sun will begin to sextile Mars at 5° of Taurus that day, Mercury at 21° of Pisces will square Jupiter at 21° of Sagittarius at 2:40 p.m.
Communications will come from a place of Deep Vision and get amplified on Jupiter’s booming voice, while the Sun and Mars work in a wonderfully supporting role. Feelings of optimism will abound. Next, at 9:49 p.m. CST, Venus at 22° of Capricorn will be exactly conjunct powerful Pluto (happening on the date of 2/22!), bringing what’s been buried/concealed up into the light. Feel what matters! This is deep love and true communication from a place of inviolable integrity. The transformation that will happen as a result of exposing what’s been buried will be profoundly beneficial, ushering in major changes for the better.
At 8:33 p.m. the night of Wednesday the 27th, the sextile between the Pisces Sun and Mars at 5° of Taurus will be exact. This will lend us a great deal of vitality and joy in the pursuit of pleasures, ones as diverse as engaging in artistic pursuits (both Pisces and Taurus love to create) to relishing gourmet delights (Taurus loves to eat!) to communing with the Divine (Pisces’ forté). The last day of the month has the Last Quarter Moon in Capricorn shining down on us, asking us if we’re emotionally satisfied with the gains we have made in achieving our goals over the course of the past, all-too-swiftly flying 28 days of February.
