I apologize for the tardy post, as we’re already one week into the month, but I’ve been reeling in shock over the untimely death of the mother of a dear friend from early childhood. Actually, the death energy ties into an astrological energetic current I’ll be highlighting in my planetary activity overview for the month. Let’s jump right into it.
This Month’s Karmic Clearing Backstory: Saturn, the South Node, and Pluto in Capricorn
This backstory stems from a very powerful triple conjunction that was exact on Wednesday, April 24: the Moon’s South Node at 20 degrees of Capricorn exactly conjunct Saturn, Capricorn’s planetary ruler, with Underworldly Pluto a mere 3 degrees away at 23 degrees of Capricorn. Saturn and Pluto are as close to each other as they’re going to get in the build-up to Their major conjunction of January 11, 2020. In fact, this time of year is serving as a foreshadowing of that conjunction, so pay extra careful attention to what is going on around you and within you, as it’s likely going to repeat itself at a much higher energetic octave next year January through March.
This is the screenshot I took of the astrology software I was running to explain this triple conjunction to my friends in a Facebook post that day:
The South Node, or Ketu in Vedic Astrology, is often referred to as an agent of karmic clearing. It carries associations with past lives–specifically, personal traits, habits, or traumatic experiences that we may have brought along with us into our current incarnation so that we can recognize them for the (detrimental) things that they are and move away from them. If you can visualize a writhing serpent or dragon coiled around the pathway of the Moon (known as its ecliptic), Ketu would serve as the serpent’s anus–literally helping us to eliminate that which no longer serves our soul’s growth. (The serpent’s head or North Node of the Moon is called Rahu, if you’re curious.)
So on its own, the South Node is a powerful force that emphasizes the dramatic clearing away process in our soul’s evolution on Earth. Yet that karmic clearing aspect was greatly amplified on April 24–and the process is still ongoing, needless to say–by the South Node’s conjunction with serious Saturn, Himself often referred to as “The Lord of Karma” in Western astrology. So we have a doubly intense purging process, if you will. Which House these two heavy-hitters happen to be transiting in your chart will determine the nature of the clearing process that you’re undergoing or will be undergoing.
I said plain and simple in my Facebook post from April 24 and I’m stating it again here: This is Death Energy, period. Literal, physical deaths of loved ones or even ourselves. Saturn is in full-on Grim Reaper mode (don’t forget: He carries a scythe!) in this aspect to the South Node, and with Pluto a mere three degrees away, also in Capricorn, the energies the past couple of weeks would be more aligned with Samhain than with Beltane. (I think Pagan folks in the Northern Hemisphere forget how the Other World’s portals are open just as much at Beltane as they are at Samhain–this time of year is not all pastel-colored tulips and honey.) Strangely enough, here in my city of Chicago, Illinois, the weather we’ve been having lately is more akin to what we get in November than in May: damp, clammy days with temps barely escaping the 40s. It’s as if the gray, iron-clad skies were designed by Saturn and the South Node.
Death, of whatever variety you experience it (e.g., literal, or metaphorical), brings instability because we’re suddenly being called to adapt to the changes brought by endings and new beginnings. Yet we’re now in the season of when the Sun transits the Fixed Earth Sign of Taurus, the Cosmic Bull who favors stability, moving at a slow pace. That sense of stability may feel elusive, especially in the middle of the month, when the planets shower us with a flurry of activity. Read on for my take on the full spate of planetary transits and major aspects.
Key Planetary Aspects and Transits for May 2019
May 1 and 2: Mercury squares Saturn and then Pluto, respectively. Mercury in Aries is all about rapid-fire delivery, so hopefully you didn’t run your mouth off in a way that would have made you come into conflict with figures of authority (Saturn). The square to Pluto could have brought Messages from the Deep to your conscious awareness, either from dreams or from experiences in ritual magic, shamanic journeying, etc.
Saturday, May 4: New Moon at 14 Degrees Taurus
This was a lovely, grounding Moon that formed a sextile to Neptune at 17 degrees of Pisces, which helped harness creative and spiritual Vision into Taurus’ realm of Earthy Practicality and Sensuality. The Moon also formed trines to Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn, adding a real element of long-term Manifestation Magic for whatever goals you’re looking to complete within this lunation.
Sunday, May 5: Mars in Gemini opposed Jupiter in Sagittarius. This could have brought a lot of overcommitment to (social) activities at the tail end of the weekend, or bad hangovers from the Cinco de Mayo celebrating that took place here in the US. Mars in Gemini is all about moving at warp speed and being as social as possible, while Jupiter prods us into excess. In the future, follow Taurus’ mantra of slow and steady.
Monday, May 6: Mercury enters Taurus and helps us focus our concentration and make decisions more slowly and carefully. Fact-checking gets a boost because we care about the substance of things, as does financial planning. This is a brief transit, though, as Mercury will be entering glib Gemini before the month is out.
Tuesday, May 7: Venus in Aries squares Saturn in Capricorn. Fast-flying Venus in her red-sequined Aries cocktail dress doesn’t deal well with Saturn’s cautious and serious energies, making this a potentially unpleasant day for business negotiations, handling finances, or romantic liaisons. Hold off on making big-ticket purchases.
Wednesday, May 8: Mercury in Taurus will exactly conjunct Uranus in Taurus at 9:22 a.m. CDT. This can be an excellent workday, filled with “AHA!” moments and solutions to long-standing problems present themselves in innovative, perhaps unexpected, ways. At 9:53 p.m. CDT, the Taurus Sun will sextile dreamy Neptune in Pisces, giving us rich dreams or benevolent encounters with spirits and Otherworldly Beings. Set aside offerings outdoors for the Fey Folk!
Thursday, May 9: Venus is pulling double duty on this day, forming a trine to Retrograde Jupiter in Sagittarius at 11:56 a.m. CDT and then a square to Pluto in Capricorn not long after, at 12:18 p.m. This is kind of jarring see-saw energy, sweet but sour, potentially bringing us opportunities (Jupiter) but facing difficult changes or struggles with people in power (Pluto) as well.
Saturday, May 11: The Taurus Sun trines stable Saturn in Capricorn (trine exact at 4:19 a.m. CDT). While Sun Sign Earth folks (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) will mostly benefit from this transit with Pisces Sun Sign folks being the second set of beneficiaries, everyone can harness the Cosmic Call to Enjoy Nature. Taurean energy loves outdoor pursuits like gardening, getting the dirt under your fingernails, and eventually seeing the results of your hard work with lovely flowers or vegetables growing to fruition. If you’re not a gardener, be in some kind of green outdoor space: picnic in a meadow, hike in the woods, attune yourselves to the vital, pulsing, and restorative Earth beneath your feet! This energy is also excellent for financial planning, so play with your investment portfolio on Friday the 10th. Ask for that well-deserved raise!
Mothers’ Day in the US (May 12) will have the Moon transiting the Earthy, nurturing sign of Virgo, a Sign archetypally associated with the ancient Goddesses Demeter and Isis/Aset. What are the ways that you can nurture your mom, if you are lucky to have her on this planet with you at this time, and our Mother Earth? Focus on the Virgo activity of Service to Others.
Monday, May 13: The Taurus Sun trines powerful Pluto in Capricorn at 10:04 p.m. CDT. This energy calls us to be co-creators with the Powers of Manifestation. What changes are you hoping to make in your life for the better? What practical steps can you take to achieve them and maintain them long term?
Tuesday, May 14: Venus in the final degree of Aries sextiles Mars in the final degree of Gemini at 8:58 a.m. CDT. This can be an excellent evening to plan an adventurous date or even attend some kind of business networking function, gala, fundraiser, or other event that is characterized by networking and Mastering the Art of the Schmooze. When planets transit the final degree of a sign, they express the energy of that sign at its most intense level. It’s definitely a good day to be an extrovert, or attempt at being one if you’re introverted, because you don’t want to miss out on the socializing energies this day was made for. Don’t fritter this energy away in the lower-vibrational Gemini pursuit of gossiping!
Wednesday, May 15: An Action-Packed Day!
First off, we have lovely and artistic Venus entering Her home sign of Taurus at 4:46 a.m. CDT. Venus in Taurus is an energy symbolically expressed in the imagery of the Tarot’s Empress Card. This is the time to bask in the energies of Abundance, of Pleasures and Treasures. Sun and Rising Sign Taurus folks will be feeling extra beautiful and joyful–enjoy this transit and work your mojo!
At 8:21 p.m., Mercury in Taurus will sextile Neptune in Pisces. This energy is excellent for doing ritual, for spirit communications, or for tapping into your creative talents: write, paint, sculpt, dance, and make music! Keep your dream journal or a tape recorder by your bedside to record interesting visions or spirit sojourns when you sleep.
Lastly, at 10:10 p.m. CDT, warlike Mars leaves exciting Gemini behind and enters the moody Cardinal Waters of Cancer. Mars is very unhappy about being in Cancer, as He doesn’t like Water signs except for Scorpio (which He loves and co-rules along with Pluto). That being said, this transit might help us make changes that don’t need to take place on center stage, in full view of everyone–activity gets moved beneath the surface, so to speak, as Cancer is an inward-pulling energy. The caution for everyone with Mars in this transit is to not fall into the trap of being so emotionally defensive that you can’t understand another person’s perspective. The plus side, since Cancer is the sign associated with Home and Family, is that it’s going to be a good time to marshal your energies into home repairs, decorating, real estate, and similar concerns. Be on good terms with your mother, if she’s alive, as Cancer is the sign of the Maternal figures in our lives.
On Thursday, May 16, Mercury in Taurus trines no-nonsense Saturn in Capricorn (trine exact at 6:09 p.m.). This is excellent energy for uncovering the truth, doing research, engaging in business negotiations. The facts check out; our thinking is grounded, flawlessly logical.
Saturday, May 18: Full Moon at 27 Degrees Scorpio (4:11 p.m. CDT)
This full moon takes place in the context of Mercury’s trine to Pluto, exact at 12:46 a.m. CDT, so since Scorpio likes to keep secrets and the Mercury-Pluto trine reveals that which has been kept hidden, one likely manifestation of this lunar energy is the revelation, wanted or not, of deeply kept secrets. How will you react to what you find out? Full moons are always times of heightened emotions, so keep a close tab on what you’re feeling and what triggered it.
This full moon is the culmination of whatever seeds you intentionally planted with the energies of the Taurus New Moon on the 4th. Do you like what you’re harvesting? Is it satisfying?
Venus will form an exact conjunction to crazy-making Uranus in Taurus that day, exact at 11:16 in the morning, amping up our desires for kinkiness and impulsively pursuing surprise attractions. Maybe one of the Scorpionic secrets that gets revealed is knowing that someone has a crush on you–and you had no clue all along. This Full Moon can be fun or it can plunge you into Scorpio’s Underworld currents. Choose well!
Tuesday, May 21: Hail and Welcome to the Cardinal Air Energies of Gemini!
Gemini energy is fun-loving, quick-witted, free-wheeling, and in constant need of stimulation, so think of the Gemini glyph (II) as a doorway through which we enter to experience life at a heightened state of mental agility. Mercury, the planet that rules Gemini, has been moving direct so quickly that He will catch up to the Sun the very day the Sun enters Gemini, and Their conjunction will be exact at 8:07 a.m. This is going to be a markedly busy workday and an excellent one for kicking off projects, brainstorming ideas, networking, and sales. The only drawback is to be constantly multitasking (Gemini’s dexterity) and ramping up your energy to the point that you become careless or take on too much at once. Don’t overcommit.
The freewheeling energies continue into the next day, May 22, when Mars in Cancer sextiles Uranus in Taurus. Energies will be riding high and unpredictable. Slow your roll to avoid your chances of getting into a car accident or other Uranian surprise of the negative variety. On the plus side, this is a day for breakthroughs of all kinds.
On Wednesday, May 29, Mercury in Gemini squares Neptune in Pisces, bringing us back to the Land of Confusion, not unlike when Mercury was Retrograde in Pisces in February and March. Things we couldn’t decipher or make sense of earlier in the year, and that caused us headaches, might resurface at this time, so be careful and be sure you have all the facts straight if you’re stuck at a decision-making crossroads.
Mercury in Gemini opposes Jupiter in Sagittarius (opposition exact at 10:12 p.m. CDT) the next night on the 30th, bringing the caution of overstepping bounds. Ask yourself if what you’re planning on doing is absolutely necessary, and make sure you’re not running your mouth off or acting out of hype and not substance.
Venusian Grace At Its Most Grounded Closes the Month
Beguiling Venus, strengthened by being in Her home sign of Taurus, forms a trine to stabilizing Saturn in Capricorn on the 31st and then a trine to Pluto in Capricorn on June 2. The questions Venus poses for us at this time are these: What do we love and value? How can we ensure their long-term viability, whether we’re talking about romantic relationships, or investment portfolios, or artistic projects? What and who are we emotionally invested in? Is our heart-placed thinking grounded in reality and solid? Venus in Taurus knows exactly what She wants and is determined to get it. Patience is Her virtue in addition to being focused. This is an excellent time to invest or make large purchases like a new car or house. Saturn serves as a Daddy Warbucks in this trine to Venus, and Pluto favors upgrades. Go for it!
